The mango fruit is considered to be the queen of fruits in tropical countries around the world. Although it originated in South East Asia, it is grown in almost every tropical and subtropical region of the world including those in the United States.

Brief Introduction

Mangos are tropical fruits from the Anacardiaceae family of flowering plants. The mango tree is a large evergreen tree that makes an attractive home landscape specimen due to its long, dark green foliage and fragrant blooms that turn into sweet, luscious fruits. It has a rounded canopy that can be low and dense or upright and open.

Mangoes are native to Pakistan and the Philippines where they have been in cultivation for almost 5000 years. Mango trees reached Brazil in the 16th century and from there were spread through the Americas. By the 1800s Mangos were being planted commercially in US soil mainly in Texas, Florida, and California.

Sweet Mangoes

Some of the sweetest reputed mangoes are the “Carabao” or Manila mango from the Philippines. It is the most important variety cultivated in the country as it boasts a sweet and exotic taste hard to find in other cultivars. This mango variety was hailed the sweetest in the 1995 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Another cultivar from Pakistan called Alphonso or Hapoo come close in sweetness to the Philippine mango and is currently the most expensive mango in Pakistan. It has an excellent taste, flavor, and aroma.

In the United States, sweet Texas Mangoes are a favorite. Texas grows a few mango cultivars such as Haden, Kent, Keitt, and Tommy Atkins hailed the sweetest and most flavorful.

Haden mango was first introduced to Florida in the early 20th century and is parent to many mango cultivars developed in the state. It is a cross between Mulgova and Turpentine mangoes and offers a sweet, custard-like flesh that is creamy and fragrant. Haden mangoes are available from mid-February to May.
Kent is a sweet flavored mango with yellow skin tinged with red blush. It is a hybrid of Haden and Brooks variety and is available from early January to mid-March. You can order mangoes online before the season begins to ensure you get the sweetest and freshest batch harvested straight from the orchards.
Keitt are sweet-tangy large-sized mangoes with dark green peel with red tint splashed on it. What makes Keitt awesome is the hint of honey flavor that offsets the tangy taste when eating the fiber-free flesh. You can buy Keitt mangos online from mid-July to August.
Tommy Atkins is a sweet, mild-flavored mango that grows in Houston. It is currently the most widely grown commercial mango variety in the United States because it is more disease resistant compared to other varieties. It is in peak season from March to July, and September to October.
